When it comes to choosing a credit card , UK consumers are getting more and more savvy if compared to Malaysian consumers. There are hundreds of credit cards available with great deals in the market, thus getting the right card is important. Choosing the wrong credit card will cost you a fortune in unnecessary interest payments to the credit card companies.
While credit cards are a marvelous convenience, they are also a crafty money trap. I am not talking about the way plastic tempts you to overspend. What I mean is that we do not read thorough enough on tips and information to help us choose the best credit cards.
Share with you some of my tips on choosing the right credit card:
1. Compare Interest Rates. Don’t just focus on the low promotional interest rate which will only last for a limited period. Get a permanent low interest credit card that will help to keep your monthly payments low on larger purchases.
2. Apply for Credit Cards During Promotions. Make use of the annual fee waiver, balance transfer, contest and free gift that credit card companies tend to offer new members. Find out more about the different balance transfer being offered if your existing outstanding balance is costing you too much.
3. Consider Cashback Credit Cards or Low Interest Credit Cards if you’re the type of person who always pays the balance in full every month. Then, you stand to gain most from one of these cashback credit deals.
4. Choose Credit Cards Relevant to Your Lifestyle. Let’s say you are an avid supporter of your football team. Use a football credit card to support your club and help the talents of the future.
What if you are like me who likes to give to charity once in a while ? A charity credit card uses a reward or loyalty scheme just like a cashback credit card – but instead of paying the reward into your pocket, the credit card company contributes it to the charity listed on the face of the credit card.
5. Compare All Charges on Your Credit Cards. Besides interest, there are other fees you may have to pay, such as annual fees, late payment fees and fees to participate in a reward program.
6. What About a Bad Credit Credit Card? It is a great option if you have difficult circumstances or poor credit history like me. Nearly every major issuer of credit cards offers a ‘bad credit credit card’ – a card that is specifically designed for those who’ve had credit problems in the past.
