With so many established and no-name brands of LCD monitors vying for your dollars, it pays to do a little research. Here are some simple buying tips:

* Inspect the LCD in person. Low-end units often lack some features.

* Check the field of vision. On low-cost LCDs, the display can be difficult to read if you’re not directly in front of the screen.

* Check for dead pixels. Most displays have a few, but don’t buy a unit with clusters of them.

* Check the technical support and warranty. Top brands offer up to a three-year warranty.

Before you grab a paper towel and the bottle Windex to clean your high tech display, you need to realize that LCD monitors are very different than CRT monitors. There is most certainly a right way to clean an lcd monitor. If you don’t follow these tips, you may well be asking for a replacement come next year.

Flat screen monitors, also known as LCD monitors, are a little different than their CRT cousins when it comes to cleaning. Your standard CRT monitor has a glass screen and be cleaned in pretty much the same way as you would any other glass in your home or office.

Flat screen monitors, however, require a bit of special care when cleaning. Their displays are much more sensitive and are easily scratched and damaged.

Follow the easy steps below to safely clean your flat screen monitor in just a few minutes.

1. Turn off the monitor. If the screen is dark, it will be easier to see the areas that are dirty or oily.

2. Use a dry, soft cloth and very gently wipe the screen. A great choice would be the microfiber type of cloth used to clean eyeglasses. See Tip #1 below for kinds of cloths to avoid.

3. If the dry cloth did not completely remove the dirt or oil, do not press harder in an attempt to scrub it off. Pushing directly on the LCD screen can often cause pixels to burn out.

4. If necessary, dampen the cloth with distilled water or with an equal ratio of distilled water to white vinegar.

5. The plastic edge that surrounds the screen can be cleaned with any multipurpose cleaner but take care to avoid contact with the screen itself.

If you have decided to install an alarm system in your home, you will need to be sure that the alarm company you choose can provide the service that it promises to deliver.

Here are some general tips you need to know before deciding which company you choose to spend money on alarm system monitoring and services.

1. Ask if the company carries general liability, workman’s compensation, and errors or omissions insurance. You can ask for certificates of insurance for these items. If the company is not properly protected, any claims or losses may fall on you, the homeowner.

2. Ask to see the company’s business license, which allows them to do business in your community.

3. Ask for referrals of other customers in your area that have had systems installed like the one you are considering.

4. Ask if the company has been established for three to five years.

5. Ask where alarm system monitoring center is located. Some companies have their central monitoring center located in other states.

6. Be sure the company does the entire installation and does not subcontract work.

7. Review the contract carefully before you sign to make sure everything is agreed on is in writing. Know what the warranty period is and what is included in the warranty.
